California Law: California Government Documents

About State Documents

California government agencies publish documents in much the same way as the federal government, but on a smaller scale. California has scaled back the number of documents it publishes in print, and in California agencies are not required by law to send a copy of each document it produces to the State publisher. This leads to a very haphazard publication schedule of state documents with most documents being published by individual agencies as they see fit on their own web sites, which may or may not be archived.

California documents that are in the Law Library can be found using our online catalog. Look up the title or author to determine if we have the document. California documents in print are shelved by call number, and are found in our California Archive collection on the basement level.

Many of our California documents have been digitized and are available on our institutional repository.
