Golden Gate's Junior College in the 1930's had one of the best collegiate swimming teams in the western United States, defeating the varsity squads of both Stanford and Cal in intercollegiate competition, and setting several Pacific Coast Intercollegiate records in the process. The GGJC "Wandering Raiders," as they were known, were the source of considerable publicity for the school. In the sequence above, the the Raiders swim across the San Francisco Bay to deliver a message of goodwill from the mayor of Oakland to the mayor of San Francisco (GGU Story vol. 1, Nagel Miner).
