Gay rights movement, also called homosexual rights movement or gay liberation movement, civil rights movement that advocates equal rights for gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender persons; seeks to eliminate sodomy laws barring homosexual acts between consenting adults; and calls for an end to discrimination against gay men, lesbians, and transgender persons in employment, credit, housing, public accommodations, and other areas of life.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals as a demographic group remained largely silent and unseen in American culture until after World War II. Prior to the World Wars, many gay and lesbian Americans hid their sexual orientation out of fear and shame. Gay men who lived in urban centers often formed close social networks with other gay men yet remained a part of a hidden subculture. During the 1940s and 1950s, LGBT Americans enjoyed many freedoms that they had not previously been afforded; their presence was increasingly "tolerated" though not widely accepted.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights movement refers to efforts to protect the civil rights of and to obtain equality for people who are homosexual (sexually attracted to people of the same sex); bisexual (attracted to members of both sexes); or transgender.

Same-sex marriage (also called gay marriage or homosexual marriage) is the union of two people of the same gender. Gay and lesbian couples experience discrimination on both the personal and the legal level; same-sex marriage was illegal in most of the United States until 2015.

Lesbians, gays, and transgender people—a majority of whom were young people of color—rebelled against a harassing police raid on the Stonewall Inn in New York City. The incident inspired gay and lesbian pride and sparked a nationwide movement.

The term "transgender" refers to people whose gender identity or expression differs from those normally associated with the sex they were assigned at birth. This contrasts with "cisgender" identity (the normative and predominant form of gender identity), in which an individual’s gender identity and expression conform to that of the sex they were assigned at birth. The prefix "trans-" means "on opposite sides of," while the prefix "cis-" mean "on the same side of."

Throughout history, people with gender-identity issues were either ignored or abused. In fact, until recently, transgender individuals — those who don't identify emotionally and psychologically with the sex they were born with — were regarded as mentally ill and were widely spurned, even by gays and lesbians. The picture is beginning to change, however, with the Obama administration championing transgender rights, the Pentagon signaling it will allow transgender soldiers and sailors to serve openly beginning next year and pop culture favorably portraying transgender celebrities. Nevertheless, transgender people continue to struggle with poor health care coverage, high rates of unemployment, violence — including murder — and suicide. Congress and most states have refused to mandate anti-discrimination protections for transgender individuals, in part because of a backlash over the issue of which public restrooms transgender people should use. While transgender individuals are experiencing growing public and political support, they have a long way to go before they can achieve full acceptance.

This study examines how educators navigate social and academic environments in order to incorporate inclusive pedagogical practices and cultivate safe schools for LGBTQ students.

This research describes the impact of an integrated training program (Positive Space I and Positive Space II) on pre-service teachers' understandings of and abilities to create safe spaces for lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgendered, two-spirited, queering and/or questioning (LGBTQ) youth and allies in schools. Our Bachelor of Education program incorporates these workshops as part of sociology of education and inclusion classes that are mandatory courses for all pre-service teachers. Our findings suggest that for the pre-service teachers we teach, the Positive Space program is needed if they are to be allies and to interrupt heteronormativity.

Scholars have a limited understanding of what drives opinion on transgender rights. The present study begins to fill this gap by applying attribution theory to data from a national quota-based (U.S. Census approximation) online survey of 1000 U.S. citizens to evaluate how individuals' beliefs about the biological origin of a person's transgender status influence support for transgender rights, including employment, housing, healthcare, and bathroom protections.

Transgender persons face frequent instances of stigma that may make them vulnerable to adverse mental and physical health outcomes. To assess the associations of stigma with psychosocial functioning and health, U.S. military personnel self-identifying as transgender completed anonymous online measures of stigmatizing situations within the military, health, psychosocial functioning, eating pathology, risk behaviors, and coping strategies.

A disappointingly high level of bias toward gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) individuals has been recognized in the general population. The U.S. Department of Justice (2013) confirmed 20.8% of hate crimes reported to police in 2013 were founded on bias toward perceived sexual orientation.

How do lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) employees fare in US workplaces? Beyond formal discrimination, do LGBT workers encounter biases that degrade the quality of their day-to-day workplace experiences? Using a representative sample of more than 300,000 employees in 28 "best case" organizations—federal agencies with LGBT-inclusive policies—the authors examine not only whether these informal workplace inequalities occur but also where and for whom they are most exaggerated.

The Supreme Court ruled in June that the 1964 Civil Rights Act prohibits workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. The decision is expected to affect policies and behavior far beyond the workplace, including in education, housing and health care. The Department of Health and Human Services has proposed defining sex as either male or female, unchangeable, based on the gender identity a person has at birth, and wants the departments of Education, Justice and Labor to adopt this definition to establish uniformity in government. By changing the definition of sex, the Trump administration would eliminate civil rights protections for the estimated 1.4 million Americans who identify as a gender other than the one they were born with.
